Q: I'm new at this, what should I try?
Q: I'm new at this, what should I try?
A: Start small. Try something you would already enjoy eating and eat half of a serving. Most new customers gravitate toward Tollhouse cookies and rightfully so! There is very little cannabis flavor in the cookie itself, and the combination of fats and sugars helps the effects to build slowly. If you are a person who enjoys gummy candies, Birdy also offers "half pint" gummies which have twice as many smaller gummies on a card for the same price. These are excellent for bedtime, or for subtle pain management without the psychoactive effects of THC.

Q: Where does the THC come from?
Q: Where does the THC come from?
A: Simply put, from cannabis. Birdy does not add any synthetic formulas, delta 8, or other snake oil ingredients to her edibles. THC bonds best to fat. After decarboxylating the cannabis, Birdy uses a low temperature to gently infuse coconut oil, MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) oil, and sometimes even heavy cream or olive oil depending on the recipe. After infusing, the cannabis is strained from the fat and discarded, while the infused fat is what goes into the delicious edibles you get delivered to your door.

Q: Why are Birdy's edibles so much tastier than the ones I've tried before?
Q: Why are Birdy's edibles so much tastier than the ones I've tried before?
A: Quality of Cannabis and dosage.
A: Quality of Cannabis and dosage.
Regarding Quality: Birdy does not use trim, ABV (already been vaped), or poor quality bud. The cannabis used for your edibles is grown locally (yay, small business!) and it is the same "high" quality bud that you would put into your pipe or joint. It is for this reason that you really can't taste the flavor of the cannabis in most of Birdy's recipes. If you have had a poor experience with edibles in the past, they were most likely made from leaf trim (the parts of the plant usually discarded for its low THC percentage) and it takes A LOT of trim to experience the psychoactive effects of cannabis. That means there is a lot more chlorophyll (green tasting part of cannabis) in those other edibles, leaving a nasty taste.

Regarding Dosage: Many home cooks try to get too much "bang for their buck" and over-infuse the cooking medium with way, waaaay too much cannabis flower or leaf. The reality is, these edibles are often difficult to swallow, and may even take you on an unpredictable and often too intense high. Birdy keeps most of her edibles within a low-to-mid range of THC making them not only delicious, but totally safe to snack on as eating an entire cookie or brownie won't make you feel regretful later when you can't control your buzz.

Q: Why didn't my edible work?
Q: Why didn't my edible work?
A: It's complicated. Your body may have destroyed the THC before fully digesting it, or you may have a high tolerance.

Explanation: If you suffer from acid reflux, indegestion, or frequently get heartburn, you may have high acidity in your stomach which can render the THC useless before you get to experience the effects.

Advice: Take an antacid/tums/baking soda a half hour before eating your edible to calm the acids in your stomach before they can destroy the THC. Be aware of what else you are eating/drinking with your edible, as certain sodas or spices can trigger an acid reflux event. Also, see section below about THC and Fats.

Explanation: If you are a daily smoker, (or for various other reasons) you may have a high tolerance for consumable cannabis.

Advice: Take advantage of one of the weekly specials- there are usually one or two options with a higher percentage of THC per edible ratio for just this reason! Another option is obviously, to consume more at once the next time.

Magic words: in some rare cases, one must utter the phrase "These edibles ain't SHIT!" in an exasperated voice after eating a second edible in order for the ride of their life to begin.
Q: Why does one edible work, while a different edible with a similar dosage didn't?

A: Different fats are digested or absorbed differently. Many customers have a preference for a product that has nothing to do with taste. Because each body is different, Birdy makes several types of infusions to meet the needs of many. If you didn't have luck with your purchase, please let us know and we will give you a sample of a different type of edible with your next purchase!

Coconut oil: Used in most baked goods and our most popular item: tollhouse cookies. Generally takes anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours to begin to take effect, as this oil must be digested first and filtered through the liver for you to begin to feel the high.

MCT (Medium Chain Triglyceride) or Fractionated Coconut oil: Used in gummies as well as an accent ingredient in frostings and glazes on baked goods. Usually takes anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour to begin because this oil is absorbed through the walls of your mouth, esophagus, and stomach. This oil can bypass your liver, which results in a faster high. Often works better for people with a high tolerance, or if you suffer from acid reflux.

Heavy Cream, Olive Oil, Ghee etc: behaves the same way as coconut oil in most cases, but can take more or less time to take effect.

Cannabis: Occasionally, Birdy uses the actual decarboxylated cannabis in part of a recipe. This takes the longest to digest, and will last for several hours as your body breaks the fibrous material down. Usually is paired with one of the above for maximum effect and enjoyment.

Q: What should I do if I get too high?
Q: What should I do if I get too high?
A: Stay calm, and if possible go to sleep. While being too high can be unenjoyable or sometimes even scary, you can't "overdose" on THC. There is no need to seek medical attention unless you are experiencing symptoms of respiratory distress- which would likely be the result of an allergic reaction to an unrelated ingredient in your edible. Please read the ingredients label on the outside of your packaging if you suffer from known allergies before consumption!

Advice: Have a snack and find a quiet place to rest, and if possible take a nap or go to bed. The effects will likely wear off before you wake up, and there should be no hangover symptoms. While it sounds counterintuitive, to take even more cannabis; CBD will also reduce the effects of THC. If you have access to CBD gummies, they will help return your mind and body to its resting state.
